Kids Inc Nursery, Knaphill
High Street Retail to Nursery Conversion
Project Overview:
This complex scheme involved the full conversion of three adjoining High Street retail units into a high-spec, fully operational nursery for Kids Inc. The works required significant structural alterations, temporary works, and service upgrades to transform the existing buildings into a modern, multi-level childcare facility. Delivered in a busy High Street setting, the project demanded careful coordination from structural design through to final fit-out.
Project Highlights:
- Extensive Structural & Temporary Works: Major internal restructuring was required to create the new layout. This included underpinning, new concrete pads, and the installation of steel columns and support beams to open up the spaces for playrooms and staff areas. Multiple structural meetings were held throughout to ensure building integrity was maintained.
- New Three-Storey Staircase Installation: A new staircase connecting all three levels was constructed using structural steels installed floor-by-floor – from ground to third level – allowing seamless access from reception up to Playroom 10 on the top floor.
- High Street Location Logistics: Working on a live High Street brought its own logistical challenges. With limited frontage and close proximity to residential properties, our team managed deliveries, noise, and site access carefully to minimise disruption throughout the programme.
- New STATS & Services: All incoming services were upgraded as part of the works. New power, water, BT, and sewer connections were installed – each requiring phased coordination and close communication with local authorities and utility providers.
Conclusion:
This was a technically demanding scheme where, at one point, a full demolition and rebuild was seriously considered. Instead, through strategic planning and well-executed temporary works, we retained the original structure while delivering extensive reinforcement and structural upgrades. The finished nursery is a fantastic transformation – both inside and out – and a testament to the planning, effort, and detail invested in the earliest stages of the build. A challenging job, but one we’re extremely proud of.
