Elstree School, Prep Boarding School
Art Studio Conversion
Project Overview:
This 16-week project involved converting a redundant squash court at Elstree School, a prestigious prep boarding school, into a fully functional art studio classroom. The scheme required both internal transformation and external extension works, delivered within a live school environment.
Project Highlights:
- Conversion & Extension Works:The existing squash court was fully stripped out and reconfigured, with a new brick-and-block extension constructed and finished in monocouche render.
- Structural Alterations:Works included alterations to the gable end to accommodate new bi-fold doors opening onto a landscaped external area, along with the installation of a mezzanine level with glass balustrade.
- Services & Sustainability:Installation of new underground foul drainage, an air source heat pump for hot water and underfloor heating, and a fire alarm system linked to the main school building.
- Internal Fit-Out:High-quality finishes throughout, including sound-absorbing ceilings, feature lighting, bespoke joinery, installation of a pottery kiln, and full decoration.
- External Works:Hard landscaping, new access footpaths, external lighting, roof repairs, cross-flow ventilation, and installation of an external fire escape staircase.
- Specialist Features:Installation of Crittall-style windows, glass brickwork, DDA-compliant toilet facilities, and ecological elements, including bat and bird boxes to meet planning requirements.
- Live Environment:The project was delivered within a fully operational school, with an open-air swimming pool adjacent to the site in constant use. Works required strict safeguarding protocols, including DBS compliance, and close coordination with staff to ensure minimal disruption to teaching and pupil activity.
Conclusion:
The completed scheme has transformed an underutilised space into a modern, inspiring art facility that enhances the school’s offering. Delivered safely within a live educational setting and in line with ecological and planning requirements, the project is a strong example of SB Construction’s ability to manage complex refurbishments in sensitive environments.
